This appears to be a bug that Microsoft needs to fix. In IE, if the file is an office document it will probably launch automatically. The Adobe Reader was selected, but the checkbox next to "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" was not checked. The setting is correctly associated with Adobe Acrobat. The attachments are associated with the message. Delete mimeTypes.rdf from your Thunderbird profile folder.

Any attachment in Outlook shows the Word icon, and wants to open Word.
