You're the first person to recommend the 2.39 version of DirectVobSub over the 2.41 version, and this solved all my problems. The process is even simpler than you might think. I have tried changing the line breaks in the SRT files from Windows-style to UNIX-style but it hasn't helped.

Gentlemen, I love VLC!
