This fixed my problem with one change of the registry. Obviously after seeing what it did to the audio I didn't install it on my own pc lol. When I did an in place update from Win 7 the audio which was previously fine started having loud random pops/crackles. I did a fresh install by downloading the image from Microsoft Action Pack.
